The score is distance, not a points total.
Longshots scoring explained
A correct answer adds yards. The round total is the sum of seven shots. Rarity is measured against people playing that day, not against a fixed fame chart. The public game files, read on 6 November 2026, name five bands. The public homepage agrees that obvious answers are tap-ins and that rarer answers travel further. Balls.ie describes the range as the six-yard box out to your own penalty area.
The five bands
| Band | Yards | Blurb |
|---|---|---|
| Tap-in | 6 | Anyone could have scored that. |
| Edge of the box | 18 | Tidy. Not everyone sees it. |
| 40-yarder | 40 | Proper fan knowledge. |
| Halfway line | 55 | Hardly anyone tries that. |
| Keeper's goal | 100 | One answer. Box to box. |
How a band is chosen
The game tells you “Nobody else has said that today” or “Only X% of today’s players said that.” I do not invent a percentile cut-off for a keeper’s goal. The exact bands between those sentences are not printed on a help page. Joe Gilmore’s own example is Messi as a Ballon d’Or winner: a 6-yard tap-in. Balls.ie’s example, for a Manchester United Premier League scorer, is to think of Mame Biram Diouf rather than Wayne Rooney.
The 700 maximum
Each shot caps at 100 yards and there are seven shots, so a perfect round is 700. That product is in the public game files. The marketing page does not state 700. Share cards print “X of 700”, which is a second place the ceiling shows up. I phrase it as a cap, not as a sentence the homepage speaks aloud.
The five tiers
| Tier | From (yards) | Tagline |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday League | 0 | Plenty of shooting practice to do. |
| Non-League | 100 | Decent first touch. |
| Championship | 180 | You know your ball. |
| Top Flight | 260 | Proper anorak. |
| Ballon d'Or | 380 | Frankly absurd. |
A player share card of 259 yards was described as Championship, which sits between 180 and 259. Another card of 281 yards carried the Top Flight tagline “Proper anorak”, which starts at 260. I use those two cards as checks, not as a leaderboard.
Reading a share card
The card shape in the public game files is “LONGSHOTS #N”, then yards and tier, then a row of band marks, then optional lines: a streak, a count of keeper’s goals, and “Beat N% of players” only when that N is at least 50. It ends with “Beat me” and longshots.app. Below 50 percent the beat-line is omitted. I would not treat a missing beat-line as a broken card.
Scoring mistakes
- A timeout scores 0. A 6-yard tap-in still beats a timeout.
- A wrong answer scores 0. It is logged, not retried.
- Archive replays do not count on the Golden Boot. They can still sit on your record.
- The 100-yard answer is hidden on the team sheet until the next day.
